Air controllers suspend strike until December 22

Protest action by a number of air controllers from the Northern and Eastern parts of the country has been suspended until December 22nd, according to this Monday's statement of the Russian Air Controllers' Union which followed the talks between the Union and the Transport Ministry.

The strikers insisting on at a least a double rise of their salaries are intent on having all the disputable matters settled before December 20th.

Still earlier, the transport ministry claimed the air controllers went on strike by violating the established procedures and legislation. The action virtually paralysed some airports and caused passengers to be barred from their booked flights for days, said the state civil aviation service (SSAS) of the transport ministry.

Thus, the SSAS was compelled to close for some time the airport in Surgut, Siberia, where most of the air controllers called a hunger strike while the other Siberian airport of Nizhnevartovsk witnessed about 20 men involved in a hunger strike.
