Latin American To Be the Next Pope

According with the Italian magazine L'Espresso, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, is the favorite to succeed Juan Pablo II as the head of the Catholic Church. The publication, one of the most important in Italy, assures that if the decision were taken today, Bergoglio would receive "a great number of votes" and surely would be elected Pope.

The author of the article, a very well-known specialist in Vatican affairs, explains the reason for choosing the Argentine Cardinal as the intention of the Curia to promote a Latin American to -Saint Peter's throne. Bergoglio, as many other Argentine priests, became famous due to his involvement on social issues.

However, sources of the local Catholic Church did not officially confirm the information, but agreed that Bergoglio has an excellent relationship with Rome. History teaches that not all roads lead to Rome, as the way to the Vatican is full of envy, treason, and political disputes. It is not little thing to control millions of consciences of the world.

Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires on December 17th 1936. He obtained a degree in chemistry before joining the Church in 1958. He was made a priest in 1971 and lived in Spain and Germany before returning to Argentina.

Bergoglio became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, the first Jesuit in obtain the post. He enjoys an excellent reputation in Rome and is the highest-ranked Latin American cardinal in the Vatican State.

Named cardinal in 2001, if he does become the head of the Catholic Church, he will be the first Latin American and the first Jesuit to hold the post.
