Agreement on development of cooperation between CIS states in the area of communications signed in Saint Petersburg

A cooperation agreement was signed in St. Petersburg between the Council of the Inter-parliamentary Assembly of CIS member-states and the Regional communications commonwealth (RCC).

The agreement was signed by Sergei Mironov, chairman of the Council of the CIS Inter-parliamentary Assembly and speaker of the Federation Council (the upper house of the Russian parliament) and Leonid Reiman, chairman of the Council of heads of RCC communications administrations and Russian minister of communications and information technologies.

The agreement is aimed to develop cooperation between countries of the Commonwealth in the area of communications and information technologies as well as to improve legal and legislative basis.

After the agreement was signed, Sergei Mironov told journalists that the Council of the Inter-parliamentary Assembly devoted significant attention to development of advanced technologies in the post-Soviet space, including the communications area.

He indicated that the Inter-parliamentary Assembly of the CIS member-states was prepared to actively cooperate not only with any foreign parliamentary structures but with representatives of executive power branches. He stressed that "it was the first agreement of that kind but not the last one."
