Speaker Mironov calls double-standard policy in the fight against international terrorism unacceptable

The Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of CIS (CIS IPA), Speaker of the Russian Federation Council (upper chamber of the RF Parliament) Sergei Mironov, speaking during the 20th meeting of CIS IPA on Saturday in St. Petersburg, reminded the audience that the double-standard policy in the fight against international terrorism was unacceptable.

Apart from the double-standard policy, it's also unacceptable to hide terrorists and delay their extradition.

According to Mironov, the tragic events related to the hostage-taking in Moscow confirmed once again that "the fight against terrorism must not involve any compromises".

Mironov believes that the nature of parliamentarism has a great potential in terms of providing effective means for the fight against terrorism. As an example, he mentioned the Inter-Parliamentary Forum on the fight against terrorism in St. Petersburg, which took place in March 2002 by the CIS IPA initiative.

In addition, Mironov emphasized the role of parliamentarism in settling disputes between different nationalities. In that respect, he mentioned the meetings attended by the parliamentary leaders of Caucasus region countries (CIS subjects), which recently have been conducted on a regular basis. During those meetings the participants discuss the issues of regional security and the development of inter-regional relations.
