Australia: Death Storm in Sydney

More than 20 homes were destroyed, five firefighters were injured, the state's electrical system was severely disrupted and Sydney's transport was thrown into chaos as summer burst into bushfires yesterday afternoon.

Huge plumes of smoke billowed from the blazes and, fanned by westerly winds gusting up to 70kmh, reached kilometres out to sea.

In the city, temperatures reached 37 degrees and fires were fanned by squally westerly winds. Humidity fell to below 10 per cent, dramatically worsening conditions for firefighters. As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald.
