Extension for UN Peace Force in Afghanistan

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is to stay on in Afghanistan for at least another 12 months, amid a constant scenario of instability and violence, the authority of the government practically limited to the capital city Kabul and other main urban centres.

The Security Council also called on member states to increase collaboration with more personnel, equipment and financial resources. The Netherlands and Germany have proposed to form a joint command of the ISAF after Turkey’s period in charge expires.

ISAF assists the Afghani authorities in maintaining law and order in the country and in implementing the political transition of the country from the former Taleban regime.
