Law enforcers prolong term of custody for suspects behind attack on Vitaly Gamov

The Prosecutor's Office of the Sakhalin region has prolonged the term of custody for Alexei Igrunov and Alexei Kuznetsov, both of whom are charged with an attempt on the life of Border Guards General Vitaly Gamov. According to a source in the Prosecutor's Office, both men were arrested in the Kaliningrad region and convoyed to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk more than five months ago. In the meantime, law enforcers keep searching for the third suspect, one Alexei Anikin, who had murder charges brought up against him last week. The bodies that conduct the search are Interpol and Russian federal law enforcing authorities.

On the night of May 21, 2002, unknown assailants threw several Molotov cocktails into the window of the flat occupied by Vitaly Gamov, his wife Larisa and son Ivan. The married couple suffered severe burns and was taken to Japan for treatment. The son was in a different room at the moment of the attack and escaped unharmed.

General Gamov died on May 28. His wife survived, having undergone several complex operations in a hospital in Tokyo. Doctors have transplanted about 80% of her skin.
