Japan Earns Money On Chinese Market

Japanese mobile-phone vendor Kyocera revenue from its China operations could reach US$929 million next year. The China will become the firm's major manufacturing base and a critical market.

Now company promotes the new code-division multiple-access mobile phone produced by the Kyocera Zhenhua Communication Equipment Company, its joint venture in Southwest China's Guizhou Province.

Established last December, Kyocera Zhenhua has an annual manufacturing capacity of 800,000 to 1.5 million units, he said.

More than 2 million people have subscribed to the CDMA services provided by China Unicom, which aims to increase the CDMA customer pool to 7 million by the end of the year.

The Ministry of the Information Industry last year issued 19 licences for the manufacture of CDMA equipment. Apart from the United States firm Motorola, all the licensees are Chinese companies and most of them have established joint ventures with overseas companies to produce CDMA terminals.

The co-operation between Chinese companies and international mobile-phone vendors may give local firms the opportunity to learn more about CDMA technology.

The co-operation between Kyocera and Zhenhua is a good example of the ministry's plan in action, said Chen Qingjie, president of the Zhenhua Group, Kyocera's local partner.

The joint venture enabled Kyocera to enter the Chinese market and gave Zhenhua an opportunity to learn how to make CDMA mobile phones. ©
