Cuba: Poverty tax

The Cuban Foreign Minister, Felipe Perez Roque, presented his country’s proposal to eradicate poverty at the Earth Summit in Johannesburg: a tax on richer countries to progressively bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots.

He stated that “Cuba proposes a tax of 0.1% on all financial transactions, which means an additional 400 bn. USD. Cuba also proposes that there should be a study made on the external debt of poor countries and that 50% of military spending should be sent to a UNO fund for development, which would provide another 400 bn. USD”.

The answer remains to be heard.
