Russia to prepare drafted agreement with US on division of Bering and Chukchee Seas

In 3 or 4 months Russia will prepare a new drafted agreement on thedivision of the surface of the Bering and Chukchee Seas, Alexander Nazarov,coordinator of a task group and chairman of the Federation CouncilCommittee on Problems of the North and Small Peoples, told reporters.According to him, Russian proposals on this issue will be discussed duringa visit of the Federation Council's task group to the US at the end ofSeptember.Nazarov pointed out that as a result of the signing of an agreement on thedivision of the surface of the Bering and Chukchee seas between the USSRand the US in 1990, a part of the 200-mile sea zone of the USSR wasreassigned to the US. Experts estimate that Russia's losses from thatdecision exceed $200m a year. The US ratified that agreement in 1990,whereas Russia has not ratified this agreement yet. .
