Gazprom to work out program on transfer of motor vehicles to natural gas

The Gazprom commission for the transfer to liquefied natural gas as motorfuel is going to elaborate on the program on transferring motor vehicles tonatural gas and introduce it to the government. These plans were voiced byGazprom's deputy CEO Bogdan Budzulyak. He did not specify the time framefor introducing the program. According to the Gazprom's official, thistransfer will be economically beneficial and ecologically expedient. Thevolume of oil production dropped 50 percent in Russia in the past ten yearsand reached 300m tons a year. Oil production is expected to rise slightlyto 360-370m tons a year by 2010. Meanwhile, the number of cars increased 70percent in the past five years, from 18 million in 1996 to 31 million in2001.Within the framework of the project for transferring motor vehicles toliquefied natural gas, Gazprom is going to implement the Blue Corridorproject, which stipulates the transfer to natural gas of 10 percent ofmotor vehicles used for international transportation by 2010.
