Safety Inspections Boost Oil And Gas

Because of the safety inspections at Tokyo Electric Power's five nuclear reactors the company may increase fuel oil or liquefied natural gas purchases.

The reactors make up 5,184 megawatts, or about 12 percent, of capacity at Japan's largest electricity producer. Tokyo Electric, which has enough capacity to meet demand during autumn when demand is typically lower, has to be prepared to increasing demand in winter.

Tokyo Electric's 17 nuclear reactors, which can generate 17,308 megawatts of electricity, provided more than 40 percent of the company's electricity last fiscal year.

Plants that burn LNG and other gases make up 36 percent, while crude oil and fuel oil total 10 percent, according to the company's Web site.
