Moscow celebrated its birthday
Last weekend, Moscow celebrated its birthday. The celebration was on a grand scale, as usual. However, the provisional results are not comforting: a 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death, and several people were wounded in a scuffle near the University metro station Saturday. According to different sources, from 150 to 500 people were involved in the fight. It is supposed that the disorder was instigated by rappers and skinheads. Drunk youth were leaving the open concert ground on the Moscow State University campus after a rock-concert. According to Gazeta.Ru, eighty people were arrested in connection with organization of the scuffle; a man suspected of murder was among the arrested.

On Sunday, eight people were injured in an accident at a merry-go-round at Gorky Park; three women were taken to the hospital.

Six thousand policemen secured order on City Day in Moscow. About eight thousand people were detained for different violations on August 31 and September 1. It is reported that about three million people participated in the festivities.

According to Interfax, Russian Duma speaker Gennady Seleznev said today that, last week, he met with chairman of the All-Russian education foundation Sergey Komkov. In Komkov’s words, Duma vice-speaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky and about 20 followers attacked a Serebryany Bor-2000 school belonging to the foundation. The building was captured by force. The press-service of the Moscow Prosecutor’s Office informed that criminal proceedings have been instituted against “some famous people who, contrary to the law, captured the building owned by the foundation.”
