Oil distributors seems to make a big mistake when decide to team up with other businesses to offer a wide range of services at self-service gas stations as part of efforts to attract more customers.
Now at the station the customers will be able to fuel not only their cars but also themselves in small cafés, restaurants, shopping areas.
ExxonMobil Yugen Kaisha, a Tokyo-based group company of Exxon Mobil Corp of the United States, says sales at its self-service gas stations have grown sharply as an increasing number of people visited the stations following the introduction of Doutor and McDonald's outlets.
But this isn’t a long-term tendency it’s just the first and maybe the only wave led mostly by 1 yen to 3 yen lower prices at self-service gasoline.
As of late June, the number of self-service gas stations totaled about 1,600 in Japan, mainly in urban areas in the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya regions.
The association groups about 27,000 petroleum dealers — both corporations and individuals — in Japan.
