Results of Russian Antarctic exploration over past 4 years to be summed up in St. Petersburg

In St. Petersburg Russian researchers will sum up the results of their studies of the Antarctic over the past four years.

RIA Novosti learned in the state scientific centre of the Russian Federation "The Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute" that a scientific conference on the studies and environmental protection of the Antarctic will be held here on November 13th-15th.

The main aim of the conference will be to sum up the results of the implementation of the first part of the sub-program "Studies and Exploration of the Antarctic" of the federal targeted program "World Ocean." In particular, Russian scientists have carried out comprehensive studies on subglacial Lake Vostok, defined the parameters of the present-day state of the Antarctic's climatic system, and have drawn up a complex of digital geological-geophysical charts of the Antarctic. Work has begun to modernize the existing Antarctic infrastructure and create a new wintering complex at Progress station.
