UN Receives Letter From Iraq Announcing Acceptance of Resolution 1441

On 13th November, Mohammad Al-Douri, the Iraqi Ambassador to the United Nations delivered a letter from Baghdad which stated that the Iraqi regime agrees with the terms of Resolution 1441 on the UNMOVIC weapons inspection programme, which receives the green light to go ahead next Monday.

The letter accepts the conditions of the Security Council Resolution, claiming that “we are prepared to receive the inspectors within the assigned timetable. We are eager to see them perform their duties in accordance with international law as soon as possible”.

Full Iraqi compliance with the inspection team will be met in return with a lifting of sanctions, welcoming Iraq back as a full member of the international community. Iraq has repeatedly claimed that it does not have any weapons of mass destruction, however, the UN document gives Baghdad 30 days in which to draw up a list of these weapons and their components. The real test will be the interpretation by the UN Security Council in 30 days’ time if Iraq has not drawn up a list, claiming it cannot make an inventory of what it does not have.
