Russia Intends to Enhance Cooperation with Chile in APEC

Russia intends to enhance cooperation with Chile in APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation), Alexander Yakovenko, the official spokesman for the RF Foreign Ministry, said in his interview with RIA Novosti ahead of Chilean President Ricardo Lagos's visit to Russia, scheduled for October 2nd-6th.

According to the official, both countries regard APEC not only as a multilateral structure, unique for the Asian-Pacific region, to conduct a dialogue on key issues of trade and economic cooperation in the region, but also as an effective mechanism of interaction to solve urgent global problems, such as international terrorism.

Moscow hopes that a regular summit of the forum, due to be held in Latin America, Mexico, at the end of October, will contribute to the expansion of Russia's Trans-Pacific ties with Latin-American countries, including Chile.

Moscow considers development of the dialogue with the region's interstate associations in a multilateral format as an important channel to enhance Russian-Latin-American cooperation.

"We have acquired a good experience of holding consultations between Russia and the Rio Group on political issues and problems of global and regional securities," Yakovenko remarked.

"We hope to strengthen cooperation with Chile as a member of the Rio Group's coordinating "three" within the framework of Russia's relations with this influential Latin-American political association," he said.

Original members, Consultative sides of the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, Russia and Chile are among the leading "Antarctic powers", their cooperation within the framework of the treaty being traditionally constructive.

Moscow is for developing the Antarctic cooperation with Chile in various spheres on the basis of the corresponding intergovernmental agreement of February 14th, 1995, the RF Foreign Ministry official spokesman pointed out.
