Bashkiria to Become Parliamentary Republic

On Wednesday the constitutional conference in Bashkiria approved the new draft of the constitution providing for setting up a parliamentary republic.

President of Bashkiria Murtaza Rakhimov declared at the conference that "for as multi-national a society as ours the most acceptable form of government organization could be a parliamentary republic with a strong executive branch in the person of a government that would be responsible before the people and those who voted for it."

The head of Bashkiria actually confirmed his wish to leave the post of president and hand power over to the republic's parliament and government.

"In conditions when there is no president the figure of chairman of the government comes to the foreground in the executive system," noted Murtaza Rakhimov. At the same time, according to federal norms, the post of chairman of the government must be an elective one.

The participants in the constitutional conference of the republic agreed with these proposals of the working commission. It is assumed that the new draft of the constitution of Bashkiria will be examined by the parliament of the republic already in the near future.
