Tuesday Night Fever in Rio

Grenades, bombs, machine-gun fire, all in a policeman’s night-shift. When a group of friends of the main drugs barons of Rio de Janeiro, incarcerated in the famous Bangu III high-security jail, decided to free them, they woke up the whole city with a fireworks display of diversionary tactics.

While the inmates inside the prison rioted and took hostages, their friends outside stormed the prison, while others created havoc around the city to spread the police forces to the limit. In the south of Rio de Janeiro, groups of men rode around on motorcycles spraying the air with automatic gunfire, another group detonated a bomb in a shopping centre, while other groups in the north shot dead a policeman and wounded two others.

Meanwhile, the Guanabara Palace, the headquarters of the government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, was attacked along with various other police stations and vehicles. The attempt to free the traffickers was foiled by the security forces.
