Scientific expedition to search for meteorite which fell in eastern Siberia

An expedition of Irkutsk scientists will leave on Tuesday for the Irkutsk region (eastern Siberia) to search for the meteorite which fell there.

Deputy director of the solar and lithosphere physics institute of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Viktor Grigoryev pointed out that according to the latest data, the meteorite fell on September 25 not in the Bodaibinsky region as was considered earlier but 30 km away from the Mama settlement. The analysis of the data provided by the Irkutsk seismologists and the American satellite that registered the flash of the meteorite which exploded in the atmosphere helped to specify the place of the fall.

According to Grigoryev, it is hardly possible to find the fragments of the celestial body now: snow has already fallen in this northern region and frosts have set in. The main task is to narrow down the region of search for the meteorite. For this purpose the scientists intend to move into the difficult of access taiga, where the meteorite fell, as far as possible.

The expedition will last for a week. The next group of scientists will go there next spring.
