First cases of Ebola infection suspected in Russia

Panic gripped the Oryol region of Russia today, October 16. Two young students of African descent were hospitalized with symptoms of Ebola virus.

The patients were placed in isolation wards of the department for infectious diseases of the Botkin City Hospital of Oryol. The day earlier, 20-year-old Monteiro Bolde Iuri and 23-year-old Santos Monteiro Euk Lidish came to Oryol by bus from Moscow, after they had arrived in the Russian capital by plane from Guinea-Bissau.

Representatives of the hospital said that the patients' temperature rose to 37.7 degrees upon their return from their homeland in Africa. The young men's blood samples were sent for laboratory analysis in the Oryol region. The people, who had contacted the patients, were accommodated in a separate section of the dormitory of the Oryol State University. Reportedly, they have no symptoms of the deadly virus.
