Nizhny Novgorod to commemorate 700th anniversary of St. Sergius of Radonezh

The meeting of the Organizing Committee for the celebration of the 700th anniversary since the birth of St. Sergius of Radonezh and the 650th anniversary of his stay on the Nizhny Novgorod land took place in the region.

Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Valery Shantsev and Metropolitan of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas, Georgy, chaired the meeting. The participants discussed the plan of celebrations, as well as implementation of education project "Sergius Sloboda."

"The celebrations will take place in more than 20 districts of the region. They will include repairs of significant objects, historically associated with the name of the prominent saint, as well as cultural and historical activities, including the implementation of the project "Sergius Sloboda." In the future, the project will contribute for the development of regional studies and educational work. The year 2014 is not going to be the year when anniversary celebrations end. In 2015, we will celebrate the 650th anniversary of St. Sergius of Radonezh's visit to the Nizhny Novgorod land. This date is also important for us, because it is connected with the history of our land," said Valery Shantsev.

The year 2014 marks 700 years since the birth of St. Sergius. The events dedicated to the anniversary will be held throughout Russia. In 2015, another significant date will be marked - the 650th anniversary of the stay of Reverend Sergius of Radonezh on the Nizhny Novgorod land.
