Chelyabinsk region responds to Western sanctions

Acting Governor of the Chelyabinsk region Boris Dubrovsky conducted a meeting devoted to the Strategy for the Development of the Chelyabinsk region in the agricultural sector until 2020. Given the current economic and political situation, it is the development of agriculture that can become the springboard for the growth of the Southern Urals.

This topic is of particular relevance due to the limitation of imports of agricultural products, raw materials and food from the countries that imposed sanctions against Russia.

"I think that Vladimir Putin's decision is correct politically, as this is an adequate response to foreign sanctions and attempts to arrange the economic blockade of our country, - said Boris Dubrovsky. - The situation calls for prompt response. We are ready to provide food not only for the Chelyabinsk region, but also deliver food products to other regions. Now our agricultural producers have a real chance to take the vacant niche. Consumers should not suffer either in terms of the amount of production, or in quality and price," he said.

The Chelyabinsk region is self-sufficient in basic foodstuffs. The region is significantly above the level of food security on many positions.

"In the current situation it is necessary to respond to various actions and sanctions against Russia, to create better conditions for local farmers, - the chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Agricultural, Food and Fish Policy, Gennady Gorbunov said. - In connection with the presidential decree on the restriction of food supplies from a number of countries, the statement from the head of the Chelyabinsk region came right on time, when he said that the region is capable of providing food to other regions of the country. A reserve has been made in many areas: the construction of new plants for the production and processing of poultry, pork, cattle and milk production. We must strive to produce as many of our own foodstuffs as possible. Now is the time when we have very good reasons to increase the production and supplies of food from the Chelyabinsk region to markets throughout Russia. The Southern Urals has a good basis and all favorable conditions to make not just one, but two or three steps forward for the development of agribusiness and strengthen food security of our country."

"The region can develop dynamically, including in the field of agriculture, - economist, director of the Center of Agricultural Policy of the Russian Academy of  National Economy and Civil Service, Natalia Shagayda said. - If in the Chelyabinsk region they not only produce, but also process and make finished products, it's just a perfect example."
