Ulyanovsk region students to have gold and silver medals back

The Governor of the Ulyanovsk region Sergei Morozov addressed the general public with a suggestion to use gold and silver medals at schools of the Ulyanovsk region again to encourage students to study better. Teachers and students asked the governor should put forward the suggestion on the federal level.

The Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation ordered to stop the practice of awarding excelling students with medals from 2014. Instead, students will receive red certificates of education. However, a survey conducted among teachers and students of the region showed that more than 80 percent of respondents would like to have the practice back. Governor Sergei Morozov supported the idea as well.

According to Morozov, "the initiative of Ulyanovsk teachers to keep gold and silver medals once again gave me the feeling that we share common views." The governor stressed that, in his opinion, "a lot of people not only in the Ulyanovsk region, but also in Russia will support the idea of reinstating this beautiful tradition in a new way."

"Silver and gold medals as a measure of moral encouragement to schoolchildren is an important and traditional method to support Russian education and culture. This is a way for students to receive an award for their efforts to make achievements in their studies. This is a very good initiative. One day they will show this medal to their children, which is very good per se," State Duma deputy Yevgeny Fyodorov told Pravda.Ru.
