In Nizhny Novgorod region, experts of the Russian Statistics Agency (Rosstat) recorded a decline in prices on a number of food items. In particular, potatoes and carrots became much cheaper in the region.
According to Rosstat, from July 8 to August 12, 2013, average prices decreased by five percent. Potato prices fell by 35 percent; the vegetable can be purchased at the price of 23.5 rubles per kilogram. Carrot prices dropped by 30 percent - to 36 rubles per kilogram.
Also, experts noted a decline in prices on vegetables: cabbage and onions. Fish, buckwheat and noodles have become cheaper as well: prices on these products have fallen by eight percent.
It is worth noting that the region implements the program called "Buy Nizhny Novgorod Products." The program was developed on instructions from Governor Valery Shantsev. Starting from 2005, the share of local products on the markets has increased from 15 to 62 percent. By 2020, according to regional authorities, the figure will make up 80 percent.
According to the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, the Nizhniy Novgorod region is one of the leading regions of Russia with the most affordable food to the population for the second consecutive year.
