Nizhny Novgorod region holds festival of folk arts

In the Nizhny Novgorod region, the seventh regional festival "Brotherhood of folk craftsmen" was held. The event marked the 300th anniversary of the Gorodetsky gingerbread.

Folk arts and crafts have long been the hallmark of the Nizhny Novgorod region, and the holding of such festivals not only contributes to their development, but also attracts a large number of tourists to the region.

Residents and guests of the Nizhny Novgorod region have an opportunity to visit festivals of folk arts every weekend. This year, there were important festivals held, such as "Soul family songs" and "Golden Khokhloma."

"Our life evolves rapidly and becomes more comfortable and more modern. We see the development of nano-, bio- and information technologies. Folk arts and crafts that can be called the soul of Russia do not go anywhere from our life. Many of them are not only a hallmark of the Nizhny Novgorod region, but of our vast country on the whole," Valery Shantsev, the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region said.

In the Volga region, there are 25 enterprises and private entrepreneurs that work in the field of folk arts, as well as two centers of folk crafts and a pottery center. In the region, there is a program to support the industry of folk arts and crafts. Only in 2012, 10 entities of folk arts received grants for the development of their industries. The total amount of state support of the regional target program "Conservation, revival and development of folk arts and crafts of the Nizhny Novgorod Region in 2012-2014" made up more than 7.4 million rubles.

Addressing the participants and guests of the festival, Governor Shantsev said that in the town of Gorodets, there was "neither a street, nor a monument in memory of Yuri Dolgoruky, the founder of the town." He offered to immortalize the name of the founder. Residents of Gorodets supported the initiative.

The festival of "Brotherhood of folk craftsmen" was visited by representatives of 17 regions of Russia, as well as Japan, Belarus, Lithuania and Romania.
