Senator Margelov: Akhmed Zakayev's detention is Danish authorities mistakes correction

Mikhail Margelov, head of the international committee of the Federation Council (Upper Chamber of the Russian Parliament), has described the detention in Copenhagen of Akhmed Zakayev, who calls himself representative of the leader of the Chechen separatists, "the beginning of work on the mistakes" of the Danish authorities.

The Senator told journalists on Wednesday that by having agreed to hold the so-called world Chechen congress in Copenhagen, the government of Denmark "could have jeopardized its relations with Russia."

"I consider the holding of that criminal assemblage to be a tremendous mistake of the Danish authorities," said Margelov.

Recalling that the so-called world Chechen congress began its work on the Day of Mourning in Russia for the victims of the terrorist act in Moscow, the Senator stressed that this "had justly aroused a negative reaction of the whole world."

Fleming Mung, press-secretary of the Copenhagen police, confirmed to RIA Novosti the fact of Zakayev's detention on Wednesday morning. He said that the police of Copenhagen and Denmark's Ministry of Justice intended today to define what further legal steps were to be taken in connection with Zakayev's detention.

Well-informed sources in the Russian law-enforcement bodies reported that Akhmed Zakayev who was detained in Denmark, has been on the international wanted list for the past year, with his detention and arrest being sanctioned. Zakayev is accused on three counts of the Criminal Code of Russia - "armed revolt," "organisation of illegal armed formations" and encroachment on the lives of officers of law-enforcement bodies."
