Nizhny Novgorod switches to gas engine fuel

The Nizhny Novgorod region continues to implement the program "Clean City". Within the scope of the program, it is planned to use natural gas as fuel for municipal buses. To date, the region already has 100 units of environmentally friendly transport.

Nizhny Novgorod Governor Valery Shantsev has recently examined the implementation of the regional program in Vetluga. According to the governor, expanding the possibilities of use of transport on gas-engine fuel will significantly improve the environment by reducing operating costs.

To date, the Nizhny Novgorod region has executed the pilot project of Gazprom and Sibur to switch 100 municipal buses to natural gas. During six months of the work of environmentally friendly transport, about six million rubles have been saved.

Moreover, the project has become an example to follow for other automobile companies of the region. Vehicles of the Vetluzhsky Auto Park are being switched to natural gas partially or fully; similar works are being conducted in the Kstovsky district.

In the Vetluzhsky Auto Park, 18 buses powered by natural gas will save around 150-170 thousand rubles monthly on fuel - one of the main items of expenditure for automobile companies.

The use of natural gas for municipal buses is only a part of the projects to be implemented by the government of the Nizhny Novgorod region. The projects are being conducted to execute the orders of President Vladimir Putin to expand the possibilities of using natural gas as a fuel.

"We have filed an application to the Ministry of Transport of Russia for the purchase of 253 buses on methane and 165 buses on propane-butane, on the condition of federal co-financing. GAZ Group and Sarov Nuclear Center have presented fine developments this year in the field of Bi-fuel engines. Expanding the use of transport on natural gas will significantly improve the environment by reducing operating costs. I instructed to prepare a pilot program to re-equip one of the automobile parks of Nizhny Novgorod," Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Valery Shantsev said.

It is also worth noting that the introduction of innovations in the field of passenger transport in the Nizhny Novgorod region was appreciated on the federal level. On November 12, 2012 the regional government became the winner of the All-Russian award "Energy Efficient Russia - 2012" for switching  100 buses to gas-engine fuel.
