Drunk driving should entail tough punishment - Medvedev

"The parliament must produce the toughest version of the law of drunk driving," Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Tuesday at a meeting with leaders of parliamentary factions.

The website of the government of the Russian Federation contains a positive report from December 18, 2012 to the bill proposed from MP Irina Yarovaya about measures to strengthen responsibility for safety of the roads. According to this document, the administrative penalty will be increased to 50,000 rubles ($1,700) and to 200,000 rubles ($6,700) for certain offenses while intoxicated. The bill also provides for significant toughening of criminal liability for injury to life and health in road accidents caused by drunk drivers.

In November 2012, the Prime Minister wrote on his Twitter that he would suggest a fine of 500,000 rubles ($16,700) for DUI.
