Moscow will continue to respond to hostile actions from Washington, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference devoted to the results of foreign policy in 2012. However, Lavrov said, Russia's position, as before, is aimed at the development of Russian-American relations.

The relations between the two countries soured considerably since the adoption of the Magnitsky Act in the USA that limited the entry of Russian citizens to the United States. In response, the Russian Federation adopted the so-called "law of Dima Yakovlev" that involved a range of sanctions against the U.S. citizens, guilty of human rights violations, as well as a ban on adoptions of Russian children by Americans.
