Nizhny Novgorod governor awards best students

On November 8, 2012, Nizhny Novgorod Governor Valery Shantsev awarded best undergraduate and postgraduate students of the region with diplomas of the winners of region's scholarships. Next year, all winners will receive additional scholarships of the government. The award ceremony was held in the Kremlin of the city of Nizhny Novgorod.

"It is symbolic that we are meeting on the eve of the World Science Day, which is celebrated on the 10th of November by UNESCO's decision - said Valery Shantsev, opening the ceremony. - The support for science among young people is a priority for us, because the further development of the economy of our region and country will depend on what kind of new generation we will have.

According to Valery Shantsev, the Nizhny Novgorod region has great authority owing to the initiative of young scientists. During the existence of scholarships, the number of post-graduate students at universities and research institutes has had a six-fold increase. More than 1,000 of them have already become candidates, doctors and teachers. "The exodus of scientists from scientific institutes in recent years has stopped," said the head of the region.

The Nizhny Novgorod region is now in the top three of the regions in terms of industrial potential, educational base, the development of science and the creation of new intellectual property. "All this means that we have chosen the right direction for the development of the Nizhny Novgorod science, and we will continue to support it," said the head of the region.

In turn, the winners thanked Valery Shantsev for the appreciation of their work, for the support of young scientists from the Nizhny Novgorod region.

About 600 people in the region receive scholarships in 14 different categories. About seven million rubles are allocated from the regional budget for scholarships annually.
