Valery Shantsev opens new subway station in Nizhny Novgorod

November 4, 2012, on the day of the 400th anniversary of the People's Militia, saw the ceremonial opening of the new station of the Nizhny Novgorod subway - Gorkovskaya. The event was attended by the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Valery Shantsev and Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Svetlana Orlova.

"To complete the unfinished object, whose story lasted for nearly 30 years, to hand over the key to a transport facility of Nizhniy Novgorod - this is quite a feat. And this is a feat of Nizhny Novgorod residents: designers, transporters, subway builders and workers, and ordinary people who had to make up with inconveniences of the construction," said Valery Shantsev. The head of the region congratulated subway builders and workers on the opening of the first station in the mountainous part of Nizhny Novgorod and thanked them for their dedicated work.

The governor and guests of the ceremony took a ride from Gorkovskaya to Moskovskaya stations on "Kuzma Minin" train. Nearly 200 people attended the event. The station was opened for passengers the next day.

Gorkovskaya station was not the only achievement of the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod region. It became the starting intermediate object in a series of major infrastructure reforms.

The construction of the Nizhny Novgorod subway began in the late 70's. The system was supposed to connect the lower part of the city with the upper one. In 1987, the project of Gorkovskaya station was developed together with the project of the metro bridge over the Oka River. Active construction works at the site resumed in 2006.
