Technical innovation to ensure strict control over vodka quality

Toxicologists in the Novgorod region in Russia's northwest have begun this year to identify previously undetectable impurities in the environment.

The newest gas chromatography used by employees at the regional state epidemic supervision centre has allowed them to establish the presence of ethyl-mercaptan and methyl-mercaptan in the air, as well as croton aldehyde in alcoholic drinks and acetic acid in construction materials. All these substances harm the human body.

RIA Novosti learnt in the local administration that so far only five out of the 188 samples of goods taken since the beginning of the year had tested positive for impurities.
