Life in Yakutia changed unrecognizably

On June 9th, the head of Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Yegor Borisov, appeared at the press conference devoted to a whole string of events connected with the region. It goes about the 380th anniversary of Yakutia's membership in the Russian Federation and the 90th anniversary since the foundation of the Republic. Mr. Borisov also spoke about the forthcoming 5th International Sports Games Children of Asia.

During the meeting with reporters, Borisov spoke about the development of the republic and about the plans of the local administration. In particular, the head of Yakutia said that the quality of life had changed unrecognizably in the region during the recent decade. The rich national culture and spirituality of northern peoples received the new development as well, he added.

"Development is the most important thing that independence gave us. We practically had nothing back then. Then, a remote part of Russia made a breakthrough in the development," Borisov said.

"Children of Asia" Games will solve a number of issues that we have. We are putting our city - Yakutsk - an ancient city - into order. We build new buildings and roads. We were supposed to have four objects ready for the games. The indoor sports complex is complete. The pool will be ready by June 15th. The pool is being built according to international standards. We are also completing the sports complex for national kinds of sport. By June 25th, we plan to finish the international airport complex," the head of Yakutia said.

However, the development of infrastructure should not affect the nature, which is preserved in Yakutia in its original form.

"The nature is pure. There is no production along the banks of the Lena River. Nearly 90 percent of the natural world in Yakutia is intact. This should be preserved not only for the residents of Yakutia, but for the whole planet," Borisov said.

Yegor Borisov told Pravda.Ru correspondent of his attitude to the recently approved law about direct gubernatorial elections.

"This is a reality that people take and that the country's administration understands. I think that this is an absolutely objective thing. A governor is supposed to be elected. It is important to realize this responsibility. I personally can realize that very well. Elected or appointed - I feel my responsibility fully," Borisov said.

The head of Yakutia also spoke about the development of northern territories. "We actively participate in developing the North, in terms of putting things into order there in the first place. In addition, the interest in the Arctic region has increased lately. This can be useful and important not from the political, but from the economic point of view. In connection with the development of the law about the Arctic region, we made a number of suggestions. One of the most important of them is about populating the Lyakhovsky and Novosibirsky islands. They are uninhabited for the time being, but the Chinese set their claims for the Arctic region already. We believe that those islands must be populated by our hunters and deer-breeders," Yegor Borisov, the head of Sakha Republic (Yakutia) said.
