Russia: The Annan peace plan, irreplaceable

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Gennady Gatilov, in a meeting with the Special Envoy of the United Nations Organization (UNO) and the Arab League (AL) to Syria, Kofi Annan, said that the Annan peace plan is irreplaceable, according to a report released Tuesday by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Similarly, Gatilov has urged the international community to cooperate more when it comes to supporting the six point peace plan proposed by Annan.

"We must all work together to materialize the Annan peace plan," he said.

The Russian top diplomat stressed, moreover, that Russia maintains a permanent communication with the Syrian government and the opposition of the Arab country, to resolve the situation through dialogue, and urged the powers that have any influence on the Syrian opposition, armed terrorist groups as we know, to adopt the same measures.

He has also assured that Russia supports the review of different conditions that can help realize such a plan.

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, in a telephone call held recently with Annan, reaffirmed Russia's support to the measures proposed by the UN special envoy of the international organization.

Kofi Annan has praised the invaluable cooperation of the Russian nation with the UN to remedy the conflict imposed on the Syrian people.

Since mid-March 2011, Syria is the scene of rioting by armed terrorist groups, which have the support of the West and some regional governments, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, to end the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Asad.

The Syrian government agreed, on the 27th of March, to the six-point plan for peace of Kofi Annan, who favors a ceasefire, the delivery of humanitarian aid and the start of negotiations between the parties involved in the conflict.

However, the Syrian opposition has repeatedly violated the Annan plan, which established a cease-fire since the 12th of April, as the Damascus government has complied with the order to return stability to the country.
