Railway accident in St. Petersburg's Baltiisky Terminal

There was an accident in St. Petersburg's Baltiisky Terminal on Monday morning. Two cars of an electric train that was leaving the depot for a test run went off the rails and came crashing into the part of the terminal where passengers were waiting. Preliminary investigation showed the accident was probably caused by failure in the brake-gear.

The Northwestern Regional Coordinating Center of the Russian emergencies ministry said the accident killed four people. Their bodies are now being extracted from under the cars with the help of air cushions.

A commission of the Russian railways ministry headed by Acting Minister Vadim Morozov flew to St. Petersburg to investigate the accident. The Baltiisky Terminal has meanwhile been closed.
