Russian parliament left without speaker

Boris Gryzlov, the speaker of the Russian parliament the State Duma, announced that he would not be working in the new parliament, which Russia elected on December 4.

"Today, I have decided to refuse from the deputy mandate," the former speaker of the lower house of the Russian parliament said.

Nothing has been said on where Mr. Gryzlov is going to work now. The name of the person, who is going to take his position in the parliament, has not been exposed either. However, Gryzlov is not going to leave the administration of United Russia party.

Gryzlov said that he had been working at the State Duma for eight years in a row. "The law does not impose any restrictions, but at this particular moment I am not going to work in the new Duma. I believe that it is incorrect to take the position of the speaker longer than two terms in a row," Interfax quoted Gryzlov as saying.

The official added that he would continue to chair the council of the administration of the ruling United Russia party. "I am ready to work on the position which the president designates for me," Boris Gryzlov said.
