Yakutia to protect extraction of mammoth bones

President of Yakutia Egor Borisov stated that the government of the republic was supposed to solve the question about the excavation and realization of mammoth tusks. The question must be solved on the legislative level, Borisov said.

"In accordance with the current legislation, mammoth tusks are categorized as extractable resources. The attempts of the republican authorities to legally regulate the extraction and the realization of mammoth bones were either rejected or partially canceled by prosecuting agencies, even though the authorities have been making such attempts since the beginning of the 1990s," Borisov said Thursday in Khabarovsk during the meeting of the council of the presidential aide. The council gathered to consider the issues about the efficient usage of natural resources of the Far East of Russia.

"It has been indicated that this issue should be regulated by the law "About Subsurface Resources." However, regulating mechanisms have not been invented yet," the president of Yakutia stated.

"The mammoth fauna that is extracted along the Northern Seaway, is exported. As a result, we can hear news on TV about contraband almost every day," Borisov said.

It is worthy of note that the remains of a mammoth were found in the north of Yakutia in summer. A group of Russian and Japanese scientists discovered the genetic material, with the help of which it will be possible to clone the prehistoric animal.
