Russia Releases Somali Pirates over Imperfect International Law

Russia ’s navy released the 10 pirates it captured during a mission to free the crew of an oil tanker seized off the Horn of Africa, the Defense Ministry said.

The lack of international laws specific to this type of crime makes it impossible to press charges, said Alexei Kuznetsov, a spokesman for the ministry in Moscow, BusinessWeek informs.

Authorities initially said the pirates would be brought to Russia to face criminal charges after hijacking a Russian oil tanker. But Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Alexei Kuznetsov told The Associated Press on Friday that the pirates have been released.

The pirates boarded the tanker Moscow University on Wednesday. They were seized Thursday after special forces from a Russian warship stormed the tanker, The Associated Press reports.
