Fifteen-year-old illegal immigrant found drowned off Greek island

A teenage girl was found dead and two others are missing after human traffickers threw a group of illegal immigrants into the sea off a Greek island, port authorities said Friday.

The dead girl was among a group of Kurdish migrants found in waters off Farmakonissi, near the southern island of Leros in the Aegean Sea. Two others, an infant and a man, were said to be missing.

Nine people, including seven men and two women, were rescued by local boats and taken to a health center on Leros for observation, authorities said.

Coast guards were conducting a search-and-rescue operation for the missing man and baby.

Greece is a busy transit point for illegal immigrants from Asia and Africa trying to reach Europe, often having paid huge sums to smugglers and traveling in rickety boats from the nearby Turkish coast.

On Thursday over 100 illegal immigrants from Iraq and four traffickers were detained in Lavrion, near Athens, after the boat carrying them from Turkey became stranded.
