Four drunk soldiers rape woman in Moldova

Four soldiers have been charged with desertion and the robbery and rape of a woman after a drinking spree at a night club in Moldova, prosecutors said Thursday.

According to a statement from the general prosecutor's office, the four deserted their military unity on Jan. 30 and headed to a night club, where they consumed alcoholic drinks.

After leaving the club in the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, they allegedly attacked 26-year-old woman, and stole jewelry, money and a cell phone worth 9,000 lei (US$700, EUR 537), the statement said.

They four will be charged with robbery and rape of the woman, it said.

There has been no comment from the soldiers' attorneys. No further details were immediately available. The four face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Moldova, a country of 3.9 million, has an army of 7,300 soldiers.
