An unidentified gunman opened fire with an automatic rifle inside the campus of a top Indian science university on Wednesday, wounding five people, police said.
The attack took place outside a conference hall of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, the country's tech hub.
The victims were attending a seminar at the institute. One of the wounded was critical, Reuters reports.
"It could have been to create panic," Narayana Gowda, a top Bangalore police official, told. "There is a red alert all over the city. We are checking suspected vehicles and people."
