Bomb explodes near nightclub in Basque region

Spanish media reported Wednesday that that a small bomb exploded at the back of a nightclub in the Pyrenees village of Sant Esteban in the &to=http://english.pravda.ru/politics/2002/09/21/36979.html' target=_blank>Basque region, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the city of Pamplona.

Police were informed of the bomb beforehand, cleared the area and there were no injuries, Spanish television stations reported. The bomb exploded at 10 p.m. (2100 GMT) in the village center.

A Basque newspaper, Gara, was reported to have received a telephone warning about the bomb from the separatist group ETA, which is battling for an independent Basque state in northern Spain and southwest France.

The area around the nightclub was immediately cleared before the explosion happened at the back of the club. No information was immediately available on the extent of the damage.
