Israel conducts new air strikes

Israeli warplanes launched new air strikes in the Gaza Strip on Monday and the military said it was targeting roads that Palestinian militants used to transport makeshift rockets to fire at the Jewish state.

Two Israeli missiles struck near a residential area in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya, damaging houses. Palestinians said two doctors were lightly wounded by shrapnel.

"Four access routes have been targeted in the northern Gaza Strip by the air force," an Israeli army spokesman said. "The routes have been used by terrorists to reach areas from which they launch rockets and mortar shells at Israeli targets."

Four Palestinians were wounded in at least nine air raids on Sunday, including three policemen and a baby.

Israel Radio quoted Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz as saying Israel would keep up military operations to put an end to Palestinian rocket attacks against the Jewish state.

Persistent violence has dimmed hopes for peacemaking that was kindled by Israel's withdrawal of troops and settlers from the Gaza Strip in September, Reuters reports.
