Iraq in elections run-up

Fifteen Iraqi gunmen stormed a hospital in Kirkuk Wednesday to free an injured terror suspect, killing at least three police officers in the raid.

Accordint to Police Chief Torhan Abdul Rahman the raid freed Yousif Mohammed Khdaier, who was arrested by Iraqi police two weeks ago. From his words Khdaier was a "terrorist" who was wanted for planting explosives.

Seven other people were injured when the rebels stormed the facility.

The death toll in from Tuesday's double suicide bombing at a police academy in Baghdad rose to 40 Wednesday, with 70 others wounded.

Tuesday night, a roadside bomb exploded near a popular cafe in the outskirts of Baghdad, killing at least three people, including an Iraqi policeman, and wounding 20, including three police officers.

The U.S. military and Iraqi officials said they fully expected insurgents would embark on such attacks to create instability before next week's Dec.15 parliamentary election, UPI reports.
