Land mine in Turkey seriously injures shepherd

A shepherd who stepped on a land mine in northeastern Turkey survived with serious injuries, but the blast killed 15 sheep, the Anatolia news agency said Monday.

Ugur Cetin, 19, crossed with his animals into a restricted military zone in Kars near the border with Armenia when he stepped on the mine, the agency said.

Cetin sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital and then transported to the city of Erzurum for further treatment, Anatolia said. Land mine explosions that kill or maim are not uncommon in eastern Turkey, AP reports.
