Two Swedish tourists, Norwegian guide killed in bus crash in Spain's Canary Islands

A bus carrying Swedish tourists veered off a highway and overturned Sunday on the Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife, killing three people, including a 5-year-old boy, and injuring 28 others, authorities said.

The accident occurred around 11 a.m. (1100GMT) on the TF-1 highway near the Parque de la Reina in San Miguel, in the south of the island. The tourists were on the way to the airport to return home after vacationing in Tenerife, said Jose Segura, a representative of the Interior Ministry in the Canary Islands.

The bus, with 31 passengers onboard, veered off the highway and crashed into several cars that were parked at a gas station, said Laura Otero, spokeswoman for the Canary Emergency service.

Two Swedish tourists _ a 40-year-old woman and a child _ and a Norwegian woman in her 30s who was the group's guide died at the scene, Otero said.

The injured, many of them children, were taken by ambulances and helicopters to hospitals in Tenerife, a favorite vacation spot for European tourists. Six of the injured, including the Spanish bus driver, are reported to be in serious condition.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear. News reports said the accident was caused by a drunken driver who passed too close in front of the bus, which could not stop and overturned. The reports could not be confirmed, AP reported. V.A.
