Denmark sends three helicopters to Iraq

Denmark sent three reconnaissance helicopters and 26 support crew to join its contingent in Iraq before a referendum and elections there later this year.

Parliament a week ago approved the government's proposal to send the unarmed French-built Fennec helicopters, which will be used in southern Iraq where the Danes are based.

The helicopters and air force personnel will be stationed there until late December, the military said.

Since their deployment in 2003, two Danish soldiers have been killed. First Lt. Bjarke Olsen Kirkman was killed Saturday when a roadside bomb exploded as the patrol vehicle he was in drove past. Another Danish soldier was killed by friendly fire in August 2003, the AP reports.
