Bus carrying pilgrims crashes in Pakistan

A bus carrying dozens of devotees of a Muslim saint overturned in central Pakistan, killing at least five people and injuring 16 others.

The accident happened in Multan, a major city in eastern Punjab province as the pilgrims were returning from a religious festival in Sehwan Sharif in southern Sindh province, local police official Mian Arshad said.

"Apparently the driver's negligence caused the accident because the bus was speeding at the time," he said.

The dead included four women and a child, Saeeda Parveen, a doctor at the hospital where the injured were taken for treatment, said. Three others were listed in critical condition, he said.

Multan is about 650 kilometers (400 miles) southwest of the capital, Islamabad.

Fatal road accidents are common in Pakistan. Many are blamed on drivers' widespread disregard for traffic rules.

The latest accident came a day after about 40 people - who were also returning from the festival in Sehwan Sharif - died in two separate road accidents in southern Pakistan, the AP reports.
