Police officer killed in explosion in Rome

One officer was killed and one was injured Wednesday in an explosion at a Carabinieri paramilitary police station about 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) south of the capital, police said.

A dispatcher at the Carabinieri central office in Rome who identified himself only by his last name, Bassetti, said the reason for the lunch-time explosion in the town of Latina was not immediately known, the AP reports.

The ANSA news agency said investigators suspected that a parcel bomb had exploded.
